One of the many great views from the Bastille |
Yesterday I took advantage of the sunny day to hike the Bastille with a friend. We met around noon and walked straight up, stopping only once we chose a place to sit and have lunch. It was cold, but the sun was shining enough to keep us from completely freezing. The clear sky provided us with a vast view of the surrounding mountains and only as we descended (and I took pictures) did the wispy clouds move in.

The téléferique- the easy way up |
It was a nice afternoon, after which I went home to rest. I read and sat around doing nothing for hours until my host father (who had been hunting that morning) knocked on my door and told me, "Hey. I killed something today. So we're going to go to a movie, okay? It's on the balcony...I'll take care of it later." We all went to a movie and then after dessert and some movie explanation for the poor English speaker, it was time to take care of the dead animal. I didn't think I could, and my host mom thought I was insane for staying, but I watched for about an hour as the mountain sheep was skinned and butchered on the kitchen table. It was fascinating (I'll spare you the pictures). My host dad just kept telling me, "This is not a good representation of France. Not everyone does this. I don't want you to have nightmares tonight, are you sure you want to keep watching?"But I did until all that was left was a pile of dark red meat, and then I went to bed and didn't have a single nightmare.
Re sheep butchering: Pics or it didn't happen.
